Q: Which months are best for riding in Japan?

Spring and autumn suit most riders : March to May, and October to November. JNTO suggests the south in spring or autumn and the north in the hottest months. The rainy season, tsuyu, runs from about 6 June to 19 July in Kansai and around the Seto Inland Sea. Those are the Japan Meteorological Agency's averages, and single years can start or end weeks earlier. Typhoons come from July to October. About three a year make landfall , most in August and September. If one is forecast for a riding day, call our support line, listed in your guidebook.

Q: How does my luggage get from one stay to the next?

Your main bag goes ahead to your next stay , one per person. You ride with a day bag for water, snacks and a rain layer. Japan is good at this. Counters that forward bags carry an official "Hands-Free Travel" sign, and JNTO explains how they work . Inn rooms are small, and couriers measure bags by size, so a soft duffel bag travels best.

Q: Is Japan safe for a cycling holiday?

Very. JNTO counts Japan among the safest countries anywhere, with low crime. A bike left outside a shop rarely goes missing, though a lock is still wise. On the road, take care in tunnels and on narrow back roads: lights on, single file, keep left. The bigger risk is summer heat. July and August often pass 35 °C , the UK Foreign Office warns, so ride early and drink often.

Question 1

How hard is a Japan bike tour, and can a first-timer manage it?

Accepted Answer

Yes, on the flatter routes. JNTO, the national tourism board, calls the Shimanami Kaido "a great starting point for beginners".

The hard part is the hills. Lesser-used back roads can be narrow, steep and winding, so take an e-bike if long climbs put you off.

Each tour page rates the riding on our five activity levels. Send us a recent ride, with its distance and climbing, and we'll say which tour fits.

Question 2

How does a self-guided bike tour in Japan work?

Accepted Answer

No guide comes along. You leave each morning when you are ready and follow the route on our app, with a digital guidebook for every day. On the Shimanami Kaido, a blue line painted on the road also marks the way.

We book the stays, the bikes and the bag transfers before you land.

For the app and everything else, bring an eSIM or rent a pocket Wi-Fi router, online or at the airport. Hotels, stations and tourist areas usually have English. Village shops often don't, so keep a translation app on your phone.

Question 3

Which months are best for riding in Japan?

Accepted Answer

Spring and autumn suit most riders: March to May, and October to November.

About three a year make landfall, most in August and September. If one is forecast for a riding day, call our support line, listed in your guidebook.

Question 4

Where do we stay: hotels or ryokan?

Accepted Answer

Both, depending on the route: town hotels, minshuku, which are small family inns, and ryokan. Our tours come with breakfast as standard. For everything else, the restaurants, cafés, grocery and convenience stores along the way are marked in the guidebook we send you.

A ryokan is a traditional inn with tatami floors, futon beds and a cotton robe, the yukata, to wear indoors. Shoes stay at the entrance. Many ryokan serve a multi-course dinner, and the tour page shows which dinners we include. Some small inns share a bathroom, and the tour page says which nights.

Question 5

How does my luggage get from one stay to the next?

Accepted Answer

Your main bag goes ahead to your next stay, one per person. You ride with a day bag for water, snacks and a rain layer.

Japan is good at this. Counters that forward bags carry an official "Hands-Free Travel" sign, and JNTO explains how they work. Inn rooms are small, and couriers measure bags by size, so a soft duffel bag travels best.

Question 6

Can I ride an e-bike, or bring my own bike?

Accepted Answer

Yes to both. When you book, choose one of our bikes or e-bikes, or bring your own. An e-bike from home must have no throttle: in Japan, a throttle makes it a motor vehicle, which needs a licence and a number plate.

Question 7

Which airport and train get me to the start?

Accepted Answer

Fly into Kansai airport, near Osaka, or into Tokyo, then take the shinkansen, Japan's bullet train. Every ride starts in a town with a railway station, with a local train or bus for the last stretch where needed. The tour page lists the trains for your first and last day.

Question 8

What if I need help on the road?

Accepted Answer

Call the support number in your guidebook if something goes wrong. That covers a puncture or a broken bike, a missing bag, a room problem or a change of plan.

In an emergency, dial:

110 for the police
119 for fire and ambulance
050-3816-2787 for JNTO's Visitor Hotline, in English, at any hour

Question 9

Do I need a visa for Japan?

Accepted Answer

Not for a holiday, if you travel on a UK, US or Australian passport. Tourists from these countries can stay up to 90 days without applying in advance. Bring a passport valid until the day you leave.

Other passports differ, so check the visa exemption list of Japan's Ministry of Foreign Affairs. Registering on Visit Japan Web before you fly is optional.

Question 10

Is Japan safe for a cycling holiday?

Accepted Answer

Very. JNTO counts Japan among the safest countries anywhere, with low crime. A bike left outside a shop rarely goes missing, though a lock is still wise.

On the road, take care in tunnels and on narrow back roads: lights on, single file, keep left. The bigger risk is summer heat. July and August often pass 35 °C, the UK Foreign Office warns, so ride early and drink often.

Question 11

Can foreigners ride bikes in Japan, and what are the rules?

Accepted Answer

They can, with no licence, under the same rules as everyone else. Ride on the left, on the road. Use the pavement (sidewalk) only where a sign allows it or the road is unsafe, and give way to people on foot. Keep lights on after dark and a bell on the bike. The law has asked cyclists to wear a helmet since April 2023, with no fine for going without.

Since 1 April 2026, police can ticket cyclists aged 16 or over, the National Police Agency says. Officers usually warn first, and the fine is paid later at a bank or post office. Fines include:

Holding a phone while riding: ¥12,000
Riding through a red light: ¥6,000
Riding against the traffic: ¥6,000
Holding an umbrella while riding: ¥5,000
No light after dark: ¥5,000

Riding after drinking is a criminal offence, not a fine. Nippon.com lists the main fines in English.

Question 12

Can I take a bike on a train or ferry in Japan?

Accepted Answer

On JR trains, only in a bag. A bike must travel taken apart and packed, in what Japanese riders call a rinko bag, and JR West then carries it free. Bike shops sell the bags for around ¥5,000, JNTO says.

Ferries are easier: JNTO says bikes can go on board without a bag, and a small fee may apply. On the Tokaido and Sanyo shinkansen, a bag over 160 cm, with length, width and height added together, needs a booked oversized-luggage seat. A bagged bike usually is.

Question 13

Does Japan have official cycle routes?

Accepted Answer

Japan has 12 National Cycle Routes, from Hokkaido in the north to Kyushu in the south, about 3,800 km in all. The government added six more in July 2026.

Each must meet a national standard. Painted arrows and signs mark the way, and there is a cycle station, a rest stop for riders, about every 20 km. There is lodging for cyclists near the route about every 60 km, and information comes in English as well as Japanese. Our guide to cycling in Japan covers the routes in more detail.

Question 14

Do I need cash in Japan, and should I tip?

Accepted Answer

Most shops and restaurants take Visa and Mastercard, JNTO says, but village shops and family-run inns may want cash. Over 28,000 ATMs in 7-Eleven stores take foreign cards. Don't tip: in Japan you pay what the bill says.

Question 15

What is an onsen, and can I go in with a tattoo?

Accepted Answer

An onsen is a hot-spring bath, and some stays on our rides have one. Wash at the taps first, then soak without a swimsuit, and keep the small towel out of the bath.

With a tattoo, ask first. Some onsen still refuse tattooed bathers, but more onsen now accept tattoos than ever, JNTO says. A cover sticker can do for a small one, and many ryokan have private baths you can book for yourselves.

Question 16

Do I need travel insurance for Japan?

Accepted Answer

Yes. Treatment in Japan is high quality but expensive, and you should expect to pay the whole cost yourself, the UK Foreign Office warns.

Redpoint Travel Protection, the insurer we work with, offers cover you can add to your booking. Look for cycling in the list of covered activities, and for cancellation cover.

Question 17

How early should I book a Japan bike tour?

Accepted Answer

Blossom and autumn-colour weeks fill first, and so do Japan's own holidays: Golden Week in early May and Obon in mid-August. Some small inns on the islands have only a few rooms, so the sooner your dates reach us, the more choice you have.

Question 18

Can we add nights, ride solo or bring children?

Accepted Answer

In most cases, yes:

Extra nights: in the start town, or in Kyoto, Osaka or Tokyo
Riding solo: single rooms cost extra, priced with your dates
Children: welcome on the easier rides if they can manage the daily distance, so send their ages and we'll suggest one
Diets: vegetarian, vegan or allergies, named when you book

Send your dates and any requests.
